Getting that perfect smile shouldn’t have to be difficult or painful, and with our skilled orthodontics team, it won’t be! We work hard to give you the smile you want in a welcoming environment. From the beginning to the end of your treatment, you’ll be in good hands as our team takes special care of your orthodontic care.

Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic care is the best way to straighten crooked teeth and get the smile you want. It doesn’t only have aesthetic benefits, though. Orthodontics helps prevent damage to your teeth and can even help with speech impediments.

For a closer look at the benefits of orthodontic treatment, take a look below:

1. Reduce the Risk of Tooth Decay

When your teeth are crowded or crooked, there’s a higher chance that they’ll get cavities or face other common dental issues. By straightening your teeth, you’ll reduce the risk of tooth decay and other issues caused by stuck or trapped food that is often caused by crooked teeth.

2. Manage Gum Disease

Gum disease can occur whether you have straight or crooked teeth, but treating it when you have crooked teeth is much more difficult. Fortunately, orthodontics can be incorporated into your gum disease treatment. This way, you can kill two birds with one stone! Fix crooked teeth and manage gum disease.

3. Improve Oral Hygiene

Straight teeth are much easier to keep clean and in good health than crooked or misaligned teeth. With orthodontic treatment, you can improve your oral hygiene without having to change your routine at all. Instead, your teeth will be that much easier to clean and care for.

4. Get the Perfect Smile

Of course, one of the more common reasons why people undergo orthodontic treatment is to achieve that perfect smile. Although this is an aesthetic reason, it certainly isn’t invalid. No matter why you choose to undergo orthodontic treatment, you’ll benefit from all the advantages that orthodontic treatment offers, not just a new, straight smile.

Attending Your Appointments

Attending all of your scheduled appointments is important to ensure that your treatment is getting the results you want. If you skip appointments or delay them, there’s a risk that your treatment will also be delayed and you’ll need care for longer than initially planned.

When you first arrive for your consultation, you’ll be able to settle in comfortably in our reception area. Help yourself to our refreshment area which has ice-cold water, snacks, or even a fresh coffee brew.

We work hard to ensure all of our patients receive dedicated care, so we never overbook appointments and we try our hardest to run on time. As such, when you arrive for your appointment, you won’t have to wait long. Once you’re in our treatment area, you’ll have an exam and X-rays with Dr. Wong so he can evaluate and determine your treatment needs. We believe in educating our patients about their options so Dr. Wong will spend time discussing your orthodontic options with you, so you can decide the treatment that you’re most comfortable with.

Once your orthodontic treatment has begun, know that we’ll be here for you along the way. If an after-hours emergency arises, Dr. Wong is on call and available to help you, including overnight and on weekends. If you have any concerns about your treatment progress, we’ll discuss them with you and evaluate what’s going on. We believe in good communication and will always keep you updated during the process.

Benefits of Clear Aligners

Some patients such as adults or teens don’t want to undergo orthodontic treatment because of the visible metal braces that are often used. However, there are ways to benefit from orthodontic treatment without the visibility of metal braces.

Clear aligners are a newer method of orthodontic care that more clients are opting for. These orthodontic tools are great for helping patients meet their orthodontic goals without having to worry about drawing attention to their treatment.

Here are a few other benefits of clear aligners:

1. They’re Invisible

One of the best parts about clear aligners, and one of the top reasons why patients choose them, is because they’re invisible. Unless you know to look for them, most people won’t even notice that you’re wearing clear aligners. Unlike metal brackets and wires, clear aligners can pass by unnoticed.

Since they’re invisible, clear aligners make it possible for you to continue with your daily life without having to worry about obvious appearance changes. For teens, this means fitting in easier with peers. For adults, it can mean maintaining a professional appearance. In both cases, clear aligners help patients retain their confidence even while undergoing orthodontic treatment.

2. No Food Restrictions

With braces, there are all sorts of foods you can and can’t eat during treatment. As braces cannot be removed at mealtimes, it’s especially important to adhere to these rules. Clear aligners, however, don’t come with food restrictions.

At mealtimes, it is important to remember to take out your aligners before eating. It’s also important to take them out if you drink anything other than water as you could end up staining your aligners otherwise. Before you put your aligners back in, be sure to brush your teeth so that you don’t trap food particles between your teeth and your aligners.

Although there aren’t food restrictions, there are some important rules to follow surrounding food and your aligners. This just ensures that your teeth remain healthy and your aligners don’t stain over time.

3. Easier Oral Hygiene

Braces make flossing extremely difficult and much more time-consuming, so many patients end up forgoing it entirely. This, unfortunately, can hurt your teeth and result in poor oral health and hygiene. Fortunately, with clear aligners, this isn’t an issue.

Clear aligners make oral hygiene much easier. You can continue your regular brushing and flossing routine, then just pop your aligners back in when you’re done. It’s as simple as that! You won’t struggle to thread floss between wires and brackets or hit your toothbrush painfully against your recently tightened braces.

4. More Comfortable

Braces are notoriously uncomfortable. It takes a few weeks for your lips to adjust to the metal brackets and after each appointment to tighten them, your teeth and gums are often sore for a day or two. With clear aligners, however, this isn’t an issue.

Clear aligners don’t cause painful sores on your lips or in your mouth. Even once you change aligners, you won’t be in as much pain as many patients with braces are. You may feel a bit uncomfortable for a while, but the aligners themselves won’t cause additional pain. As far as orthodontic treatments go, clear aligners are a nearly pain-free alternative.

5. Shorter Treatment Time

Although it depends on every individual case, most patients will have a shorter treatment time when they opt for clear aligners. While metal braces may require two years or more for treatment, most patients complete their orthodontic treatment in 12 to 18 months with clear aligners.

Again, this does depend on each individual case, but most patients will experience shorter treatment times with clear aligners. As long as you follow the instructions from your orthodontist and take care to ensure you’re always wearing your aligners, your treatment time should be reduced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that’s primarily concerned with tooth and jaw alignment. Orthodontic treatments usually aim to fix bad bite issues and crooked teeth.

Although both work with teeth, orthodontists focus only on orthodontic treatments. They’re dentists that returned to university for a few extra years and have worked in the past as regular dentists but now focus solely on orthodontic care. Dentists, on the other hand, provide dental services that revolve around issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, fillings, and extractions.

No. You’re welcome to visit an orthodontist without a referral. If you have concerns about your teeth or want to look into straightening out a crooked smile, you don’t need to speak with your dentist beforehand. Just contact our office staff and we’ll set you up with a consultation appointment!

Typically, age 7 is when children should start to be screened for orthodontic care. Unless there is a specific concern that their dentist has, there’s no need for a child to visit the orthodontist earlier than that.

It’s perfectly possible to keep playing your instrument even with braces, but you will need to adjust to the feeling. Trumpets, saxophones, trombones, flutes, and other instruments can be played by those with braces, but adjusting to the feel of your braces against your instrument will take some time.

Yes. Dentists and orthodontists will both monitor your teeth, but orthodontists won’t treat non-orthodontic issues. As such, it’s important that you’re still visiting your regular dentist so that they can ensure that your teeth are still clean and healthy.

The treatment itself doesn’t hurt, but it will take your mouth some time to adjust to the feeling of braces if that’s your treatment of choice. Clear aligners will have a much shorter adjustment period, whereas braces may be a bit more painful at the start of your treatment.

Any pain you experience can be treated with over-the-counter pain killers, but if you experience ongoing or severe pain, talk to your orthodontist immediately.

It depends on each individual scenario. Some patients may have more minor issues that can be resolved within 12 to 18 months while other patients have more complex issues. Treatment can last anywhere between 12 to 30 months or even longer depending on how well you follow care instructions from your orthodontist.
